Age of subgenus

The oldest fossilized finds of plant parts of the genus Vitis are around 100 million years old and date from the Cretaceous period . The first petrified seeds of the vine originate from the transition from the Cretaceous to the Tertiary , about 80 million years ago. From the Tertiary about 60 million years ago there are many finds with diverse forms, so the genus the family was probably particularly widespread. Petrifications of the grapevine Vitis vinifera have been found for 30 million years.
