The Evangelical Church of Herchen in the municipality of Windeck in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia was built in 1878 and inaugurated in 1879. The tower was not completed until 1885 due to financial difficulties.

Prehistory of the parish

After the Reformation , Herchen became Lutheran around 1550. As a result of a change of rulers, Catholic priests were reinstated from 1638 and the Protestant community could only meet unofficially. Since a Protestant pastor was called again in 1668, the Church of St. Peter served both denominations as a simultaneum . Plans to build their own church since 1835 were not implemented due to the low compensation offered by the Catholic community. In 1857/1861 the evangelical community Eitorf - Uckerath , which had grown through Prussian administrative officials and immigrant entrepreneurs, separated . The old church became dilapidated and the repair costs were high. In 1874 an appeal for donations was made to the Protestant churches of the Rhineland province for a new church building. One year after the tender in 1877, the foundation stone was laid for their own church.

building

The single-nave hall church with a polygonal choir is spanned by a saddle roof with small dormers. The building material was greywacke , the wall openings and cornices are made of ashlar .

Inside, the nave is divided into four bays with groin vaults . The altar is made of sandstone , the side panels were removed in 1976. The pulpit is made of wood in the neo-Gothic style and has a modern sound cover. 1979 was to replace the old air heating Multibeton - underfloor heating installed.

The square tower presented has a neo-Gothic style and is divided into four floors by cornices. Its helmet roof with four corner turrets is slated. The entrance portal in the tower with an eyelash made of red sandstone is located on the north side facing the main street.

Bells

The original bells were in World War melted down. On September 21, 1925, three new bells were purchased because the community lost all of its cash fortune in 1923. The two large bells of this were again requisitioned and melted down during World War II in 1942. They weren't replaced until 1981.

organ

The organ had been used for a short time in a church in Wuppertal before it was bought and was supplied by the Ibach company . The prospect pipes had to be removed and delivered in 1917 and could only be replaced by simple tin pipes in 1922. On May 4th 1974 it was completely restored, only a few original parts have been preserved. The organ stands on a wooden gallery.

window

The two-lane pointed arch windows were destroyed in May 1945 when the Victory Bridge was blown up and replaced by 1949. In 1973 the post-war windows , which were damaged due to poor quality, were replaced by the glass painter Karl Jörres from Bonn . Today's windows are abstract, only the four-passports show symbols of the evangelists and religion. The choir window, which was only completed in 1975, shows ears of wheat and grapes.

Monument protection

The church is registered under the number A 26 in the list of architectural monuments in Windeck .
