The Evangelische Stiftung Tannenhof is a specialist hospital for psychiatry, psychotherapy, psychosomatics and neurology in the Remscheid district of Lüttringhausen with around 1000 employees and over 565 patient beds.

history

The clinic was founded in 1896 as the "Evangelical Sanatorium for the Mentally Ill" at the suggestion of the Elberfeld pastor and later President of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland , Georg Wilhelm Hafner , and has been continuously expanded since then. Richard Gertenbach , the mayor of Lüttringhausen at the time, made sure that the extensive site was made available.

The deaconess motherhouse of the Kaiserswerth sisters, the Protestant church from 1907, the old ballroom and the former kitchen building date back to the early years . They are laid out in a visual axis and separate the historical ward buildings on both sides, in which the patients were housed separately by gender at the time. There was a “man's villa” and a “woman's villa”.

The institution also has its own cemetery. The former locksmith's shop is now "Das Lädchen".

During the time of National Socialism , some employees succeeded in preventing the deportation and murder of most of the patients who, in the eyes of those in power, had a " life unworthy of life ". As a reminder of this and as a thank you that the foundation was not hit in a bombing raid, the bells of the church are still rung every day at seven o'clock.

As the number of deaconesses continued to decline in retirement, the motherhouse was converted into a nursing training school. The cross of the Kaiserswerth sisters can still be seen at the entrance and in a window.

Location and architecture

The approximately 24 hectare site of the specialist hospital is located in the urban area of Remscheid, in the southwest of the Lüttringhausen district, and is designed like a park in the eastern part around the building . To the west, the area is wooded with a game reserve and slopes steeply towards the Leyerbach .

Since the foundation of the Tannenhof Foundation, the main entrance has been on Remscheider Strasse, but has been relocated to August-Erbschloe-Strasse and is to be designed there to be more sophisticated.

The most striking building is the seven-story higher house with a cross-like floor plan, which was named after Jochen Klepper . A memorial plaque in the entrance area reminds of him. In addition, a functioning clockwork from the company JF Weule from Bockenem in the Harz foreland is on display, which used to be in the clinic church. Formerly the Tannenhof Foundation had its own farm that took over part of the patient care. In particular, the milk came exclusively from their own farm.

Another patient building with three closed departments is named after Ludwig Steil .

structure

The clinic specializes in the areas of psychiatry , psychotherapy , neurology with special pain therapy and addiction diseases . The psychiatric clinic is responsible for inpatient psychiatric care in the Bergisches Land , especially for the cities of Wuppertal and Remscheid.

In 2009 the specialist hospital was certified by the certification company Cooperation for Transparency and Quality in Health Care (KTQ). This hospital-specific quality management certification process is carried out by the German Medical Association , the German Hospital Society , the German Nursing Council and the central associations of statutory health insurances .

In 2015, the foundation opened the “House for Mental Health” in an empty building in the Remscheid General-Anzeiger at Friedrich-Ebert-Platz .

A daycare center is also attached, which is located near the old main entrance on Remscheider Strasse.

The construction of the “Christian Hospice Bergisch Land” for Remscheid, Hückeswagen, Wermelskirchen and Radevormwald is planned on the grounds of the foundation's former estate, which is located across Remscheider Straße and down the valley towards Lüttringhauser Bach .

The orchard festival takes place in autumn every year.
