Evergestis Marocana is a butterfly from the family of Crambiden ( Crambidae ).

features

The moths have a wingspan of 20 to 22 millimeters. The head and thorax are light ocher brown, the abdomen is ocher whitish. The labial palps are short and expansive. They are ocher in color and white at the base. The forehead ( frons ) is curved and arches forward above the tongue ( glossa ). It is light ocher brown and has white scales on the sides. The vertex is scaled in tufts. The forewings have a yellow basic color. They are quite narrow and have a pointed apex . The inner and outer transverse lines can be seen. The fringing area is russet and marked with a submarginal stain. The fringed scales are uniformly dark gray. The hind wings are pearly yellowish white and have a distinctive gray border. The outer transverse line is indistinct. The fringed scales are whitish gray and brownish at the tip. On the undersides of the forewing, the drawing of the upper side is indicated in gray. The intensity of the dark-colored areas on the forewings is variable.

In the males, the valves are quite short and narrower at the base. They widen towards the apex. The uncus is quite short and thin and has strong hair and flakes. The gnathos is thin and quite broad at the base. It ends in a round toothed comb. The juxta is long and thin, the vinculum and saccus are small. The phallus is moderately long and quite thin. It is provided with small cornuti.

In females, the papillae have anal ventral two long lobes . The apophyses are quite short. The antrum is quite long and thin. It is sclerotized and slightly toothed in the middle. Opposite the seminal duct is a small, angled, rounded thickening. The bursal duct is fairly short and straight. The bursa is oval and provided with two sclerotized signs. The sclerotized ring that is in front of the seminal duct is longer than that of the similar species.

Similar species

Evergestis marocana can be distinguished from the similar species Evergestis politalis and Evergestis dumerlei on the basis of the reticulated front wings and the clearly gray-edged rear wings.

distribution

Evergestis marocana is common in France , Spain , Portugal and North Africa ( Morocco ). A single specimen was found in Sicily .

biology

The way of life of the caterpillars does not differ from Evergestis politalis . The moths fly in two generations from May to October. Further generations are also possible in Morocco. In the Middle Atlas the species was detected up to an altitude of 1650 meters. In Portugal, Evergestis marocana lives in the sand dunes of the west coast.

Systematics

The taxon was synonymized by Rungs in 1979 with E. politalis and also by Leraut in 1997 (misspelling "maroccana"). Leraut , however, restored the species status in 2003. The following synonym is known from the literature :

  • Pionea verbascalis var. Marocana D. Lucas , 1956
