Richland Center is located in southwest Wisconsin on both sides of the Pine River , which forms part of the Mississippi River basin across the Wisconsin River . The Iowa border, formed by the Mississippi, is 41 miles west. The intersection of the three states of Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota is also located on the Mississippi and lies 86.5 km west-northwest.

The US Highway 14 runs northwest-southeast direction as the main trunk road through the center of Richland Center. The Wisconsin State Highway 56 branches off at its southern end point from US 14 and runs from there in a northerly direction as the main road through the city. Coming from the south, the Wisconsin State Highway 80 also runs through the city center and leads out of the city in a common route with the WI 56 in a northerly direction. All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
With the Richland Airport there is a small airfield 10.6 km southeast. The nearest commercial airports are La Crosse Regional Airport (115 km northwest), Dubuque Regional Airport in Dubuque , Iowa (129 km southwest), and Dane County Regional Airport in Wisconsin's capital Madison (105 km east-southeast).
