Evermod (* around 1100 in Belgium ; † February 17, 1178 in Ratzeburg ) was the first bishop of Ratzeburg . Because of his work in the eastern colonization , he is also called the Apostle of the Wends .

Life

Evermod was from 1120 one of the important followers of the founder of the Premonstratensian , Norbert von Xanten , whom he had met in Cambrai . Both fought together against representatives of “heresies” like Tanchelm . After 1131, the Norbert on a Saaleinsel in Calbe located monastery grace of God was founded, Evermod was first there and then subsequently in the Mother Monastery Monastery of Our Lady in Magdeburg provost . From here he shows responsible for the founding of the other daughter monasteries in Havelberg , Jerichow , Quedlinburg and Pöhlde .

Heinrich the Lion appointed Evermod as the first bishop of his new diocese of Ratzeburg in 1154 due to his investiture right. Evermod began with the construction of the Ratzeburg Cathedral donated by Heinrich on the Cathedral Island of the Ratzeburg Lake . A Premonstratensian monastery leaned against the cathedral, as the cloister on the north side of the church clearly indicates.

Evermod is buried in the Ratzeburg Cathedral.

His successor as bishop was Isfried von Ratzeburg after two years of vacancy .

Adoration

Evermod's canonization took place in 1728 by Pope Benedict XIII.
