It was created after an idea by Chris Rock , who uses the series to tell his own childhood experiences. After the merger of UPN with The WB , the series ran from 2006 on The CW . The title is a parody of the sitcom Everyone Loves Raymond . On May 21, 2009 the series was canceled.

overview

The series is set in Brooklyn in the early 1980s and ironically deals with topics such as prejudice caused by racism , the existence of an outsider and the poverty that prevails in some New York neighborhoods. As the son of an Afro-American family, the main character Chris has to cope with everyday life. He is constantly harassed by his younger, scheming sister Tonya and burdened with duties by his mother Rochelle. Rochelle is characterized by her pride , which runs through the series as a running gag : For example, at the beginning of the first season in almost every episode, she quits her work due to small things on the grounds that she does not need it because her husband have two jobs. Her husband Julius is therefore often very exhausted. The family has a low income, which is why Chris also has to wear the old clothes of his younger, but physically older brother Drew. Because of this, and because Chris is initially the only black person at his school, he is often the victim of school thug Caruso and other rowdies at his school. His school life is also marked by unjust teachers and his best friend Greg is also his only one.

Characters

Chris Rock

The protagonist of the series is an ambitious, innocent, normal, but often unlucky boy. Chris lives in Bedford-Stuyvesant, a neighborhood in Brooklyn . He has a younger brother and a younger sister. He would like to be a cool and popular boy, but he can't. But he does everything to have a successful life one day, which he also dreams of very often. At school he is bullied and beaten by his classmates (among other things because of his clothes and skin color). In addition, everyday life is made hell for him by his racist teachers. At home, he has to do tasks specified by his mother and he is often blackmailed by his sister. So you could think that the people around him “hate” him.

Rochelle Rock

She is the mother of Chris and his siblings. She is not intimidated and can quickly become hysterical and aggressive. She constantly changes jobs due to conflicts with her superiors. In connection with the termination, she always says: “I don't need to! My husband has two jobs! ”. She is also able to threaten her family members. Despite everything, she is a good and caring mother to her children.

Julius skirt

He is the father of the family. Because of the financial problems he is very economical with a tendency to be stingy. He often brings used items home to save money. But when it comes down to it, he also realizes that you can't set a price for everything. His character is calm and balanced as long as there is no talk of money. Julius is characterized by the fact that he always knows the exact price of everyday objects. This skill is always showcased by phrases like, "I hope you know you just threw away a 31 cents loaf?"

When it comes to the children, he rarely stands by his wife. But the woman is in command of the house.

Drew Rock

He is the younger brother of Chris, but is usually mistakenly mistaken for Chris' big brother by outsiders. Unlike Chris, he's very popular; also with the girls. His discarded clothes often have to be put on by Chris, as Drew is much taller and stronger than the slender Chris. Like his father, Drew has a great talent for estimating numbers: "Wow, that's exactly 31,970 raindrops!"

Tonya Rock

She is the younger sister of Chris and Drew. Quarrels often arise between her and her brothers as she is always trying to get her brothers into trouble. She often blackmailed Chris or Drew by not telling her parents for a fee. She is Julius' favorite spoiled child.

Gregory (Greg) Wuliger

He's the only white friend of Chris. He is happy to give him advice and Chris will help him in return if he has problems. Greg is often scared and unable to help Chris with his problems. Greg is quite shy and usually doesn't dare to approach girls openly. He is bullied and beaten because he messes with Chris.

Joey Caruso

Joey is one of the many rowdies at Chris' school. He's the most respected thug in Corleone Junior High School . Chris endures teasing and even beating from Joey every day. Joey grows up in a racist family and is therefore very aggressive towards people of different colors. He is mostly called "Caruso" by the others. When Chris enters Tattaglia High School , he thinks he got rid of Joey; however, Caruso is also at this school and continues to make life difficult for Chris. Joey usually appears suddenly on the series and gives Chris and / or Greg a punch or kick. He / she often insults him / her with racist slogans. For example, he often calls Chris “ Satchmo ”, but sometimes also “Chocolate bar”. In the last episode, he admits that he only bullied Chris out of envy of his ambition and determination, and offers him friendship.

Miss Morello

Miss Morello is Chris, Greg and Joey's class teacher. She is the perfect embodiment of all prejudices against black people and regularly makes statements such as: "I hope you still have enough time to do your homework when you have to look after your many half-brothers and half-sisters." a white woman of the time, whom Chris actually likes very much, like all well-built male African-Americans.

Risky

Risky regularly sells stolen goods in Bed-Stuy (Bedford-Stuyvesant), including televisions and records. Often it is copies or stolen goods that you can get from him for a lower price.
