He was the sixth son of Philipp Hartwig von Kleist and his wife Anna Sophia von Schachtmann .
Life
He went into the Prussian military service early and was appointed ensign in Infantry Regiment No. 12 on June 12, 1719 . On June 10, 1724, he was promoted to second lieutenant. In June 1727 he was released, but on November 7, 1727 he rejoined Infantry Regiment 25 as a second lieutenant . On April 20, 1729 he was Premier-Lieutenant and on April 8, 1732 captain of the staff. On August 16, 1737 he got his own company and on May 15, 1739 he became a major.
He fought in the Second Silesian War initially as a major in the Kroecher field battalion and, according to the list contained in a cabinet order of June 11, 1742, was awarded the order Pour le Mérite by King Friedrich II . On May 31, 1743 he became a lieutenant colonel in Infantry Regiment No. 32 . In the Battle of Hohenfriedberg he commanded a grenadier battalion, which was formed from Regiments No. 16 and Garrison Regiment No. 1 . He was wounded in this battle.
On October 30, 1745 he became a colonel and commander in Infantry Regiment No. 28 . In the battle of Kesselsdorf he was given another grenadier battalion, now from regiments No. 27 and No. 9 . On September 8, 1754, he was appointed major general; he also received the post of governor of Olezko in Lithuania and of Freienwalde and Neuenhagen in Brandenburg. In October he was also in command of Fort Prussia. He stayed that way until 1764, although he received his requested farewell on May 2, 1758. He then retired to his Groß-Tychow estate in Pomerania, where he died in 1768.
family
He was married three times. His first wife was Anna von Kettelhack in 1746 . His second wife was Essa Margarethe von Kleist (March 1, 1695; † December 26, 1765), a daughter of the Saxon Colonel Georg von Kleist († 1709). After her death he inherited the missing half of Groß Tychow. On August 22, 1768 he married Barbara Sabine von Bandemer . She was the daughter of his stepsister Barbara Hedwig von Kleist and Johann Siegmund von Bandemer . He had no children from any marriage and made his third wife a universal heiress. The inheritance brought her no luck. She got married twice more and was divorced each time.
