Ewald Hollebeek

Ewald Hollebeek also: Ewaldus Hollebeek (born September 24, 1719 in Haamstede , † October 24, 1796 in Leiden ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

The son of pastor Jeremias Hollebeek and his wife Dina Reynvaan came from an evangelical reformed Dutch pastor family. Originally he was supposed to be a merchant, which is why he stayed in Amsterdam for some time. On March 13, 1737 he enrolled at the University of Leiden where he was a student of students of Tiberius Hemsterhuis , Pieter Burman the Elder , Albert Schultens , Taco Hajo van den Honert (theologian) and Johannes Alberti . In 1744 he was pastor in the Dutch village of Oostkapelle , in 1745 in Charlois near Rotterdam and in 1747 in Middelburg .

In 1752 he was appointed professor of theology at the University of Groningen . For this he received the doctorate of theology from the senate of the university on September 1, 1752 and entered the chair on September 8, 1752 with the introductory speech de damnis, quæ præjudicia in rem theologicam inferunt, deque optima iis occurrendi methodo . He also became a university preacher in Groningen on September 17 of the same year. Here in 1759/60 the rectorate of the university took over, which he resigned with the speech De corrupto hodierni christianismi Statu in Belgio . On August 14, 1762 he was appointed professor of theology by the curators of the Leiden University, which task he took on on November 22, 1762 with the speech de theologo non vere orthodoxo, nisi vere pio .

He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1764/65 and 1780/81 . At the resignation of the offices he gave the speeches de divinae revelationis in Belgio contemtu (1765) and de utilitate ex incredulorum contra sarras litteras conaminibus in religionem christianam redundante (1781). In his lectures Hollebeck dealt with dogmatics, exegesis and homiletics. He had gained a special reputation in his day through the introduction of a synthetic thematic preaching style. His most important students were Johannes Henricus van der Palm (1763-1840), Ewaldus Kist (1762-1822) and Cornelis Fransen van Eck (1764-1830).

Hollebeek was married twice. His first marriage was on August 6, 1752 in Maarssen with Hendrina Wolff (born May 22, 1712 in Leiden; buried October 23, 1756 in Groningen), the widow of Jan Kist, and daughter of Gerardus Wolff and Aletta Geesteranus. His second marriage was in Groningen in 1758 with Anna Maria Gerdes (* February 2, 1738 in Groningen, † July 11, 1801 in Leiden), daughter of the Groningen professor of theology Daniel Gerdes (1698–1765) and his second wife Reinudina Mellema .
