Ewald Rettberg
Ewald Rettberg (born August 7, 1918 in Voerde ; † 1996 ) was a German politician ( SPD ). From 1970 to 1991 he was mayor of the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Ennepetal .
Life
Ewald Rettberg went to school in Voerde. At the time of National Socialism he was employed for a year in the compulsory agricultural labor service of the German Labor Front in Trendelburg . Before 1938 he worked for the chain technology company Wippermann in Hagen . During this time he was a member of the metalworking youth. This was incorporated into the Hitler Youth . From 1938 he had to do the Reich Labor Service , then the Wehrmacht . In 1945 he was released from American captivity . After the war he worked for the Westfälische Rundschau and then headed an agency of the Provinzial insurance in Ennepetal- Milspe .
Ewald Rettberg was married and had a son. He died of a stroke .
politics
He became a member of the SPD on January 1, 1946. From 1947 he worked in local political committees, from 1952 he was a member of the city parliament, where he was also the parliamentary group chairman and deputy mayor. In the 1960s he was also a member of the district council of the Ennepe-Ruhr district .
In March 1970 he was elected mayor of Ennepetal, in an election in which the SPD in Ennepetal had an absolute majority. He took over this office from Walter Sondermann (SPD), who had been Ennepetal's mayor since 1952. Ewald Rettberg held this office until 1981. He was replaced by Harald Wolf (SPD).
During Ewald Rettberg's tenure, Ennepetal had the highest population in the city's history (38,000). During this time, the construction of bypasses, the Haus Ennepetal event center and in 1973 the town twinning with the Belgian city of Vilvoorde fell .
Honors
Ewald Rettberg was the first to be appointed night watchman of the Voerder Kirmes. A street in a new building area on the upper Strückerberg of the Ennepetal district of Büttenberg was named after him.
