Karlsson started out as a farmer, but in the early 1950s he followed his artistic dream and moved to the municipality of Huddinge south of Stockholm . In 1956 he got his first job with the Stockholm daily Stockholms-Tidningen , which belonged to the Swedish Trade Union Confederation . There, the colleague Poul Ströyer (1923–96) drew his funny little men. When Stockholms-Tidningen stopped publishing in 1966, Karsson went to Aftonbladet , where he drew caricatures and illustrations until 1996. But it was also to be seen in other domestic and foreign newspapers and magazines, u. a. in the New York Times . Karlsson has also illustrated some books for young people, including a. the children's book Vicke Viking by Runer Jonsson , which was translated into German under the title " Wickie und die stark Männer ", and the subsequent volumes in the series about Wickie . He received several international awards for his work.

His style was rich in detail, worked through and compressed, at the same time powerful and with a touch of the grotesque. His sharp pen always hit the spot, funny, but at the same time thoughtful and of great social pathos. One of his caricatures from 1980 shows Sweden as the ship "MS SVEA" in rough seas. At the helm, or rather, at the helm, the three conservative party leaders Gösta Bohman , left, Thorbjörn Fälldin , center and Ola Ullsten , who together formed the government at the time, are fighting while opposition leader Olof Palme “sacrifices Neptune”.
