Sydney White - Campus Queen (Original title: Sydney White ) is an American comedy film from 2007 . Directed by Joe Nussbaum , the screenplay was written by Chad Creasey .

action

Sydney White, the daughter of a plumber, starts studying at Southern Atlantic University. She would like to join the same women's association (Kappa Phi Ny) to which her mother, who passed away at an early age, belonged, but is very disappointed by them and publicly humiliated by their conceited and long-time president Rachel Witchburn.

She then moves in with a group of seven outsiders who live in the rundown Vortex House, a place where fellow students can stay without connection. Sydney stands up for the previously unjustly disadvantaged and makes friends with them, because she realizes that they are closer to her in nature than the whole superficial fancy dress fuss in the fraternity house that she originally wanted to go to.

Finally, she mobilizes the outsiders to stand up for their rights and fight for the preservation of the Vortex House. Her new friend Tyler, president of another alliance and formerly with Rachel, also gets to know and love the smart girl. Their relationship is strained by the fact that he previously voted with Rachel to build a new community house, but did not know that she wanted to have it built instead of the Vortex house.

Sydney and her friends are repeatedly denounced and ridiculed by Witchburn, who uses increasingly unfair means in her attempts to defend her elitist position. In the end, she hires a hacker to erase Sydney's hard drive and thus take away the censorship and her preparations for the election debate and so beat her.

But just in time Tyler can wake her up with a kiss after she wrote her work all night long, and so she comes up to the debate early. At first she is quite alone against Witchburn, but then several of the "underprivileged" so hated by Rachel appear and support her. With the slogan "I am an idealist" she sweeps everyone away and wins the election for Student Council President.

Rachel is dismissed by her fraternity sisters with the same arguments that she used to throw Sydney out of association. In the end everyone helps to renovate the Vortex house, including her father, who rushed to receive a sad-sounding phone call, and his employees, with whom she grew up since childhood.

Reviews

Sheri Linden wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on September 21, 2007 that the film was inspired not by a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm , but by pop culture . It is intended for people under the age of 30. The " occasionally clever " script is a mixture of cartoon-like caricature and the message of well-being. The film takes far too long to get going.

The Orlando Sentinel newspaper wrote that the film showed the aftermath of long-term appearances on television sitcoms. The critic missed the " swinging " Bynes from the film She's the Man - Voll mein Typ! which he explained in part with the editing and largely with the script. The direction is " mediocre ".

backgrounds

The film was shot in Orlando and a few other locations in Florida . Its production amounted to an estimated 16.5 million US dollars . The film opened in US cinemas on September 21, 2007.

Trivia

The film alludes to the fairy tale of Snow White and the seven dwarfs. For example, there are 7 outsiders with whom she lives, her opponent's last name is Witchburn , her boyfriend Tyler Prince and she herself Sydney White ( Snow White ). Shortly before the decisive showdown, she falls asleep and only wakes up when "her prince" kisses her awake.
