The Ex'n'Pop was a club in Berlin. The club, founded in 1984, moved several times within the city and was most recently in Potsdamer Strasse in Berlin-Schöneberg . It was best known as the club where the Einstürzende Neubauten and Nick Cave held court. This is where the first German poetry slam took place under this name and Ben Becker staged his play Sid & Nancy in Ex'n'Pop. It has been run by an association since 2001.

In addition to the pub, the Ex'n'Pop also had a stage on which various concerts and events were held, as well as a small cinema. The regular events that took place in Ex'n'Pop included readings, concerts, film screenings and the German Air Guitar Championship . The club was barely recognizable as such from the outside: the windows were boarded up, there was no large sign, and you had to ring the doorbell to get in. The bar was also known as a nightcap bar, as the bar was normally open from 10 p.m. until the next morning or noon.

history

Ex'n'Pop was founded in 1984 in a house on Schwäbische Strasse in Berlin-Schöneberg, then moved to a house on Mansteinstrasse in the same district across from Leydicke in 1986 . After the lease was not renewed after a renovation of the house, the Ex'n'Pop closed temporarily before moving to its last location in 2001. The house on Potsdamer Strasse is also a formerly occupied house. The KOB club was previously located in the Ex'n'Pop premises .

The audience had a relatively large overlap with the audience of risk . The 1980s and 1990s public later migrated to the Paris Bar to a large extent . Blixa Bargeld and Nick Cave were relatively regular at Ex'n'Pop , who, according to legend, often came straight from their studio recordings in the Hansa recording studios and listened to new recordings on the Ex'n'Pop system. Cash had its postal address in the Ex'n'Pop at times and displayed photos in the Ex'n'Pop. Cave met Wim Wenders here and then got a role in the film Der Himmel über Berlin . Bands who played in the club at the beginning of their careers were for example Die Haut , The Lassie Singers and the Lolitas by Françoise Cactus . The club also hosted the first house parties in Berlin in 1988.

The boundaries between the public and the operators were fluid. The Ex'n'Pop was run by a collective for most of its time, and many of the regulars at some point began to help out at the counter or organize events themselves. The filmmaker Uli M Schueppel was one of the regulars . Though it's often rumored, Iggy Pop and David Bowie were never in Ex'n'Pop. The house band were at times the Jever Mountain Boys , founded by Alexander Hacke , in which the musician and later ex'n'pop co-owner Ed Csupkay played.

Germany's first poetry slam under this name took place in Ex'n'Pop in 1993 . This was organized by the former ex'n'pop host Wolf Hogekamp . The participants came almost exclusively from the USA, as they already knew the format from there.

In 1995 Ben Becker staged the play Sid & Nancy at Ex'n'Pop with his sister Meret Becker in the second leading role. Rehearsals and stage construction took place parallel to the normal pub operations of the club, so that everything first had to be set up at noon and then everything had to be dismantled in the afternoon.

The documentary Sid & Nancy - Ex & Pop by director Uli M Schueppel is about the piece and its chaotic history .

The Ex'n'Pop finally ceased operations on November 1, 2016 after 32 years.
