Exivious was a Dutch technical and progressive death metal band from Utrecht that was founded in 1997 and was active until 2017.

history

The band was founded in 1997 by guitarist Tymon Kruidenier (ex- Cynic ). Jan Henningheim and drummer Iwan Hendrikx joined the cast as additional members. Kruidenier also did the vocals at the beginning. The bass tracks were initially generated by a computer. In 2001 a demo followed, which included two songs. Rob Van Der Loo was also part of the band as bass player. A little later the project was paused. It was not until 2005 that a permanent line-up was found in addition to Kruidenier with the bassist Robin Zielhorst (ex-Cynic), the guitarist Michel Nienhuis and the drummer Stef Broks ( Textures ). Frans Verburg also joined the line-up as keyboard player a little later. The band's self-titled debut album followed in 2009 as a self-release. In 2010, the project paused, as Kruidenier and Zielhorst dedicated themselves to Cynic. A year later, the two separated from Cynic, so Exivious could continue. Since Broks was now completely dedicated to textures, he was replaced by Yuma van Eekelen. In 2011 the band took part in the Czech Brutal Assault . In the following year a European tour followed together with Obscura , Spawn of Possession and Gorod . At the end of 2012, the band began crowdfunding their second album Liminal . The goal of 8,000 euros was achieved within a week; in the end, the total was about twice that. The recordings for the album began in November 2012 and ended in April 2013. The album was mixed and produced by guitarist Tymon Kruidenier. In August 2013, the band signed a contract with Season of Mist . The album was released on this label in early November. On December 12, 2016, the band announced on their official website that they would break up after a few farewell gigs in 2017 due to a lack of interest in continuing the band's style and devoting themselves to new projects.

style

metalunderground.com wrote that the band on their self-titled debut album was a fusion band with technical death metal influences, while Cynic was more of a technical death metal band with fusion influences on the album Focus . In addition, the music is now always instrumental . The use of a fretless bass was also characteristic. The music on the album is comparable to the early works of Cynic and Alarum .

Anton Kostudis from metal.de also stated that the second album Liminal was more jazz than metal. The songs are progressive and seem well structured. Kostudis described the music as a mixture of The Dillinger Escape Plan , The Safety Fire and Oceansize . Oliver Passgang from Powermetal.de described the music as jazzy progressive metal, although the structure of the songs would not be apparent from the start. The songs are kept instrumental here, too, whereby the bass, which otherwise receives too little attention in the metal genre, is clearly audible. A saxophone was also used on the album .
