The Eybergturm is a total of around 18 m high observation tower that stands on the eponymous Großer Eyberg in the Palatinate Forest .
location
The Eyberg Tower is located in the southwest of the district of Dahn im Wasgau , as the southern part of the Palatinate Forest and the northern part of the Vosges are called. There is a hiking hut immediately next to the tower .
features
The tower is a steel structure . The rather narrow stairs are also made of metal, the platforms for the view are covered with wooden planks. Its design and shape is rather untypical for an observation tower. Due to the fact that the trees surrounding it have partly exceeded its height over the last few decades, an unlimited view into the distance is only possible in the south, but not in the north.
history
At its location there was a wooden tower in the 1930s , which was needed by the National Socialists for land surveying on the occasion of the construction of the west wall . Two decades later, in the early 1950s, the current Eyberg Tower was built on its foundations by the French armed forces , which served as a radar station for the Zweibrücken military airport from 1952 to 1957 .
Connection
The Eybergturm is connected to the network of hiking trails in the Palatinate Forest. A hiking trail, which is marked with a red and white bar, leads over it . This begins in Niederwürzbach in Saarland and ends north of Landau in the Palatinate in Böchingen . In addition, there are several circular hiking trails marked with numbers in its catchment area .
