Five Fuji Lakes

The five Fuji Lakes ( Japanese 富士 五 湖 Fuji goko ) are located at the northern foot of Mount Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan . They contain spring water from the volcano, whose solidified lava filters the precipitation falling on the slopes over decades and releases it into the lakes.

The lakes are, in order from west to east:

All five lakes are part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and are under special protection of nature and monuments . They are also popular travel and excursion destinations and therefore play a major role in the nationwide tourism industry. The lakes are a popular motif in traditional and modern painting , as well as in panoramic photography .

In the northwest of the lake area the Shoji Lake and the Saiko Lake border the Aokigahara forest area. The Saiko Bat Cave is located near Lake Saiko .
