description

The approximately 76 meter long five-window grotto has a total of seven entrances or day openings, with most of them appearing rather small and inconspicuous. The approximately 3 meter high and 1.2 meter wide portal of the main entrance is to the west and slightly higher than the southern cave portal. In the entrance area you will find several 8 to 10 centimeters deep, hand-drilled holes. A 6 meter long corridor leads from the main entrance to a 6 meter long and 4 meter wide room, which is illuminated by diffuse light due to several openings. Four more corridors branch off from this room. The south-western, strongly winding corridor leads to the outside after about 5 meters. The east, about 6 meters long corridor leads to a very narrow day opening, which is about 10 meters east of the main entrance. The two corridors leading from the northwestern cave wall lead into a heavily branched corridor system rising to the northwest. In this system of corridors one finds several pools and leads to three day openings located on the southwest slope of the Kugelstein.

The rocky cave floor is covered by a layer of muddy, fine-layered clay . There is a layer of yellow-brown sand over the layer of clay and a thin layer of humus on top . Numerous Roman finds were discovered in the humus layer and in the upper area of the sand layer , including numerous nails and iron fittings , some Roman oil lamps and pieces of terra sigillata . Numerous Ice Age remains of foxes , chamois , hamsters , cave bears and lions , lynx , ibex, red deer , wild boar and wolves were found in the sand deposits .
