The Principality of Galicia (Old Russian Галицкоє кънѧжьство , Ukrainian Галицьке князівство / Halyz'ke knjasiwsstvo) was a principality of the Kievan Rus around the eponymous castle of Halitsch ( Galitsch ) in the present-day Ukraine from 120524 to 1199 from 11999 to 1199 . After that it became part of the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia .

The Hungarian crown claimed after several brief rule from 1205 times the title of King of Galicia and Lodomeria ( Rex et Galiciae Lodomeriae ), which was the Austrian-Hungarian Kaisertitulatur to 1918 part.

In 1085 the principalities of Terebovlja , Zvenigorod and Peremyschl had separated from the Principality of Volhynia .

Founded in 1124

In 1124, Wassilko Rostislavich formed the principality of Halitsch from the principality of Terebovlja and gave it to his son Ivan Vasilkovich. In 1141, Vladimir Volodarowitsch, Prince of Peremyschl, united both principalities. In 1144 Ivan Berladnik, Prince of Zvenigorod, occupied Halitsch. After his fall and death, both were brought together.

In 1153 Jaroslaw Osmomysl succeeded his father. He was dynastically connected to the Grand Duchy of Kiev by marriage and extended the territory of the principality to the lower Danube .

Power struggles 1187–1189

After his death in 1187 there were long battles for his successor. His son Oleg was not accepted as a rightful descendant by the boyars. In 1188 they called Prince Roman of Volhynia as the new prince. This was driven out by the Hungarian King Béla , who made his son Andreas Prince of Halitsch. In 1189, Vladimir, another son of Prince Jaroslaw, conquered his father's principality with the help of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa .

In 1199, after the death of Wladimir Yaroslavich, Roman finally conquered the Principality of Halitsch and founded the Principality of Halitsch-Volhynia with its seat in Halitsch.

Power struggles 1205–1238

After his death in 1205, his underage sons could not hold out as princes permanently. The prince's throne was the subject of a dispute between various princely lines of the Kievan Rus and the Hungarian crown.

Hungarian royalty for Halitsch

1205, King had Andrew II. As king of Galicia and Lodomeria ( Rex et Galiciae Lodomeriae ) refers, but without having a real rule in Halych and Volyn. In 1214 he was able to make his son Koloman Prince of Galicia and even have him crowned King of Galicia and Lodomeria in 1215 (or 1216) by Archbishop John of Esztergom. After he finally had to surrender the rule again in 1221, his brother Andreas was able to achieve another Hungarian rule in Galicia in 1227 . In 1233 he was finally expelled from Galicia by Daniel Romanowitsch .

Daniel of Galicia 1238-1264

From 1238 Daniel of Galicia ruled permanently until his death in 1264 and brought stability and strength to the principality.
