history
In 1926 Nicola Romeo began building an aircraft factory in Pomigliano, but without success. In 1938, the state holding company IRI commissioned Alfa Romeo to build an aircraft and engine factory in Pomigliano with a factory airfield and an attached workers' settlement. The engineer Ugo Gobbato directed the construction of the very large industrial plant. The factory airfield was opened on April 1, 1939. During the Second World War , Alfa Romeo mainly built aircraft engines here , also under license from Daimler-Benz . On May 30, 1943, an Allied air raid destroyed over 70 percent of the production facilities. During the war, the airfield was used for military purposes by Italian, German and Allied squadrons and other units and command posts.
The reconstruction lasted until 1952. In addition to Alfa Romeo, the aircraft construction company Aerfer settled in Pomigliano and built the prototypes of the first Italian supersonic aircraft Sagittario II here . In addition, the Italian Air Force Academy used the airfield for pilot training on the North American T-6 . The airfield was closed in early 1968.
Alfa Romeo decided to convert its facilities in Pomigliano into an automobile plant and to expand it, in particular, to use the former airfield site, which was completely built over. Both the automobile plant and the development of the Alfa Romeo Alfasud were entrusted to the Austrian engineer Rudolf Hruska . After four years of construction, the new plant started operations in April 1972. In the first few years, the factory was known for numerous strikes and poor processing quality. In the following decades the following types were built in Pomigliano: Alfa Romeo 33 , Autobianchi Y10 , Fiat Tipo , Lancia Delta , Alfa Romeo 155 , 145 , 146 , 156 , 147 , GT , 159 and currently the Fiat Panda .
The plant received several awards in 2012 and 2013, including the Automotive Lean Production Award .
