The FDS non-profit foundation builds and operates student residences. The foundation is one of the largest operators of privately financed student apartments in Germany. As of 2015, the FDS non-profit foundation has a total of around 1,800 living spaces nationwide that is comparable to the total capacities in cities such as Ulm , Rostock or Siegen .
history
The FDS was founded in 1971 as the “Förderkreis Deutscher Studenten e. V. “in Erlangen by former students of the Friedrich-Alexander University . In the same year, the Konrad-Adenauer-Haus in Erlangen, the first subsidized dormitory, was opened. In 2006 the association was transformed into a non-incorporated foundation, which continues the goals and tasks under the name FDS non-profit foundation. The trustee is the Moses Mendelssohn Gemeinnützige Stiftungs GmbH . Since 2012, the foundation has also operated privately financed student apartments of the SMARTments student brand. Each of these houses bears the name of a well-deserved personality from German-Jewish history.
