The Free Art Academy Mannheim ( FKAM ) is a private art academy . She trains to become a freelance artist . She also runs a youth art school.

history

FKAM was founded in 1985 as the Free Art School Rhein-Neckar and moved into the first premises in what was then Tulla-Gymnasium Mannheim . The move to the Mannheimer Quadrate took place in 1989 and in 1996 another move to the current premises in the U3 square. The BAföG- eligible course since 1998 is completed with a diploma. Ursula Pawlak was the rector's office from 1985 to 2002, and Juliane Huber has headed FKAM since then. The Free Art Academy Mannheim is currently (2019) training around 80 students.

Course structure

The Free Art Academy Mannheim in the Herschelbad

The prerequisite for participation in the main course (7 semesters) is the successful completion of a previous semester, for which no entrance examinations are required. In the pre-semester, students get a comprehensive insight into basic subjects such as nude and object drawing, work with photography, materials science, sculptural design and theory. The qualification for the main course is achieved through exams at the end of the previous semester. The course is completed with a diploma thesis accompanied by a tutor in the last two semesters. The technology and topic of the thesis can be freely selected. The work is presented in the annual summer exhibition. In parallel to the main course, art education can be studied in 4 semesters; this course is completed with a separate examination. The degrees at FKAM are not officially recognized.

particularities

  • Enrollment in the previous semester takes place without portfolio or other exams and without age restrictions. From the 1st semester onwards, students are eligible for BAföG if the requirements are met . If the (technical) higher education entrance qualification required for the main course is missing, an additional examination can provide compensation.
  • The students are personally looked after in small semester classes by their course directors and specialist lecturers. For the 5th semester you choose an external guest lecturer yourself.
  • The range of subjects and seminars on offer includes classic subjects such as life drawing and sculpture, as well as analog photography, web design and video.
  • In the Art and Market seminar (4th / 5th semester) the economic and organizational basics of the artist's profession are taught.
  • From the beginning of the course, seminars are offered in neighboring printing workshops (lithography, screen printing, etching).
  • As part of the “Look and Listen” series of events, external artists are invited to work presentations twice a year.
  • Conversely, the International Photography Forum (FIP) of the Mannheim Reiss-Engelhorn Museum invites a photography graduate once a year to give a lecture in the Talk Photography series.
  • In addition, the Academy has been participating in the Rhein-Neckar Region Photo Festival, OFF / Foto, every year since 2015.
  • The academy cooperates with other institutions.

Lecturers

In 2019 23 lecturers teach at the Free Art Academy Mannheim, u. a. Rainer Negrelli (life drawing, lithography), Claus Stolz (photography, web design) and Michael Witlatschil (head of studies, basics of plastic).

Youth Art School (JKS)

The FKAM regards its youth art school as an essential component, which instructs children and young people from 4 to 18 years of age to express themselves creatively. The youth art school is attended by around 800 children and young people from the region every year. The creative offers are designed to be age-specific and take place on a weekly or monthly basis and as a holiday project.

Cooperations

The JKS cooperates with various general education schools and other institutions in the region. In addition, the academy participates in educational and social projects that are promoted by various sponsors (e.g. associations, foundations at the state and federal level) for the extracurricular area.

For example, a manga-style puppet theater that had been developed over two and a half years on behalf of the Kinderland Baden-Württemberg Foundation was performed in 2015. In 2015, an art carpet was created: a 290-meter-long street drawing in downtown Mannheim, on which FKAM lecturers and students worked as project managers. The initiator was Pro bono - für Kunst und Kind e. V. In 2016 a project for refugee children took place in cooperation with Caritas and Diakonie.
