The Fagraskógarfjall is a mountain in the west of Iceland , in the municipality of Borgarbyggð .

Surname

The name of the mountain means beautiful forest mountain in German . The area is hardly forested these days. The name, like many others, suggests the more numerous forests in Iceland at the time of settlement in the 9th and 10th centuries.

location

The mountain is located at the entrance to the Hnappadalur , an area now dominated by the central volcano of the Ljósufjöll . If you drive out of Borgarnes on national road 54 to the Snæfellsnes peninsula, you will in parts head straight for the mountain.

geology

Fagraskógarfjall consists of tertiary basalt layers .

Grettisbæli

At the southeast end of Fagraskógarfjall a smaller mountain juts out of it. This is made of a completely different rock, namely palagonite , and is called Grettisbæli .

One of the most important saga heroes of Iceland, Grettir Ásmundarsson, who is also an outlaw , is said to have slept there after some time in a gray tent - because of better cover - and from there made the surrounding courtyards unsafe.
