Angustum falcatifolium is a tree of the genus falcatifolium in the family of podocarpaceae (Podocarpaceae). The natural range of the species is on Borneo . It is listed as critically endangered onthe IUCN Red List . The species is only known from two areas in protected national parks, but the populations are likely to continue to decline.

description

Appearance

Falcatifolium angustum grows as evergreen up to 20 meters high tree . The trunk reaches a diameter of about 30 centimeters ( diameter at chest height ). The trunk bark is purple-brown, gray when exposed to the weather, initially smooth and later rough and scaly. The treetop is narrow. The leafy branches are drooping, round and hairless.

leaves

The needles (leaves) of young trees are sitting or short-stalked, narrow, linear-lanceolate, bent forward, about 7 centimeters long and about 1.2 to 1.5 millimeters wide. The base of the leaf is sloping, the edges converge to the sharp-pointed tip. The needles of older trees are shorter, 1.8 to 3.5 centimeters long and 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters wide, tapering down from the base and have parallel leaf margins almost the entire length. Both sides are keeled and show a sharply raised midrib. The tip is piercing too. Several stomata lines are formed on both sides of the leaf, extending from the base to the tip.

Cones and seeds

The pollen cones grow terminally or laterally in the leaf axils. In the more or less immature state they are 8 millimeters long and have a diameter of 2 millimeters. Seed cones are not known.

Distribution and ecology

The natural range is in Sarawak on Borneo , where two locations near the coast are known. The species grows in Kerangas, open forests on acidic, impoverished white sands ( Podzol ), at heights of 90 to 240 meters. The distribution area can probably be assigned to winter hardiness zone 10 with mean annual minimum temperatures between −1.1 and +4.4 degrees Celsius (30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit ). Falcatifolium angustum grows together with various species of the genera Gymnostoma , Parastemon and Shorea albida .

Hazard and protection

In the Red List of the IUCN is falcatifolium angustum out as endangered ( "Endangered"). The species is only known from two sites, Bintulu and Kuching, which are located in protected areas (Bako National Park and Niah National Park). The actual range is, or at least was likely to be greater. But the habitat is deteriorating, forests are being converted into plantations for oil palms ( Elaeis guineensis ), and trees are still being felled in one of the protected areas. The distribution area is given as 1476 square kilometers, there are stocks on about 12 square kilometers.

Systematics and Etymology

Falcatifolium angustum is a species from the genus Falcatifolium , which belongs to the Podocarpaceae family. It was first described in 1969 by David John de Laubenfels in the Journal of the Arnold Arboretum . No synonyms are known. The kind differs from other kinds of the kind by the extremely narrow leaves, and the not lying in one plane arrangement of the needles. However, no seed cones are known, and only inadequate finds have been made of the pollen cones.

The genus name Falcatifolium is derived from the Latin falcis , "sickle" and folia , "leaf", and thus refers to the sickle-like curved leaves. The specific epithet angustum describes the narrow leaves.
