The Farmington River is a right tributary of the Connecticut River in Hartford County of the US state Connecticut .
The Farmington River arises at the confluence of its two headwaters, East Branch and West Branch Farmington River, southeast of New Hartford . It initially flows in a south-southeast direction past Collinsville and Unionville . At Farmington the river makes a sharp turn north and passes the small town of Avon . At Tariffville , the Farmington River makes another sharp turn to the southeast. The river flows in the lower reaches in a predominantly easterly direction and meets the Connecticut River at Windsor . The Farmington River has a length of 75 km. With a catchment area of 1,580 km², the Farmington River is one of the largest tributaries of the Connecticut River.
About 14 miles of the West Branch Farmington River and just under 2 km of the Farmington River below the confluence of its two source rivers to the city limits between New Hartford and Canton are designated as National Wild and Scenic River .
