Farul Comisiei Europene a Dunării de la Sulina ( German lighthouse of the European Danube Commission of Sulina ) is a lighthouse ( Romanian Farul ) and cultural monument in Romania .
description
The structure, consisting of the 17.7 m high tower and a house for the beacon keepers , was built in Sulina in 1870 on behalf of the European Danube Commission . At that time the city was directly on the Black Sea and the beacon marked the approach to the Sulinaarm , the middle and navigable estuary of the Danube . However, due to sedimentation , the estuary has shifted further and further east and the beacon became less important. For this reason it was replaced in 1983 by a new lighthouse, the Farul nou de la Sulina .
