action

Dino Fabrizzi leads a successful life. He sells Maseratis in Nice , has a passionate relationship with Hélène, lives in a luxurious apartment and is popular with everyone as a fun-loving Italian. When Charles, his boss, announced his early resignation, it was actually clear that Dino would be his successor.

But Dino Fabrizzi has a secret: his real name is Mourad Ben Saoud, and he is not from Italy, but is the son of immigrants of Algerian origin. His parents live in Marseille and do not know about his double life, but believe that he works in Rome. When Dinos father falls ill and asks his son to celebrate Ramadan in his place, Dino is forced to promise him. From then on he gets into trouble because his sudden abstinence does not suit the fun-loving Italian.

He tries to keep his secret, except for his best friend, a Jewish artist who deals with identity, and his sister. The strict rules of fasting and the prayer times to be observed are becoming increasingly difficult to reconcile with his business schedule and Hélène's desires. To the imam , who accompanied him as a mentor during Ramadan, he also mentions that he has felt incredibly good since the beginning of the fast.

But one day he is caught by Landrin, his competitor for the executive chair, at midday prayers, and his dizziness is exposed. Dino agrees to forego the lucrative position. But when the incompetent Landrin seriously insulted his Arab business partners before an important business meeting and the trade collapsed, he accused Dino of having worked for the other side. Dino then reveals his identity and resigns. Landrin sees himself as the winner, but is immediately dismissed.

Mourad now faces his true identity and initially loses everything: work, bank account, credit cards and Hélène too. She is very disappointed because he lied to her instead of trusting her. As a supposedly illegal foreigner, he is deported and ends up in prison in Algeria.

His recovered father takes him out. At first the father is silent and pretends to be aloof, but then he shows his son in his own way that he too has lived with a lie all his life: his legendary tap dance with Sammy Davis Junior , which he likes to tell the family about, never has took place. The family finally helps Mourad out of his crisis and Hélène agrees to marry him.

background

Director Olivier Baroux and leading actor Kad Merad have known each other since they were young. As "Kad et Olivier" you are a successful comedy duo on radio and television. Both had the idea of making a comedy with a serious background for a long time, and not least because of Kad Merad's own family history, they decided to make a film about the problems of migrants in France. Merad himself is of Algerian descent and at the beginning of his career almost changed his name from "Kaddour Merad" to "François Merad".

Reviews

“[...] despite the serious background, the two succeeded in making a film that is extremely funny, especially in the details, with outrageous situation comedy. An entertaining work with heart and brain "

- Zitty 02/2011

“The greatest merit, however, is that" Fasting In Italian "reveals prejudices and idiosyncrasies, but never becomes malicious or cynical and thus strikes a tone that is hard to find in the current debate about integration, but which is sorely needed. "

- fluter.de January 2011

“Fasting in Italian” may end up being too optimistic to be able to depict social reality. The film is always an entertaining look at the everyday problems and problems with integration. Not only because of the first-class leading actor Kad Merad (" Welcome to the Sch'tis "). The thoughtful comedy also works its way gently, easily and gallantly on stereotypes: Without making fun of Arabs, Italians and French, Muslims, Jews and Catholics. "
