Fastjet Airlines (under the brand name fastjet ), also known as Fastjet Tanzania , is a Tanzanian low-cost airline based in Dar es Salaam and based at Dar es Salaam Airport . It is a subsidiary of the British holding company fastjet Plc , which is based in Johannesburg , South Africa and is traded on the London Stock Exchange .

The airline currently (as of November 2019) only operates with its subsidiary in Zimbabwe .

history

Fastjet Airlines was founded in 2011 under the name Fly540 Tanzania as a subsidiary of the Kenyan airline Fly540 . In the summer of 2012 it was announced that the entire Fly540 group of companies, which also had subsidiaries in Angola and Ghana , would be taken over by the British holding company Fastjet Plc. Founder of this holding is Stelios Haji-Ioannou , who is also the British budget airline easyJet and the group of companies easyGroup founded.

First of all, the Fly540 subsidiaries in Angola, Ghana and Tanzania were acquired by Fastjet. Fly 540 Tanzania then returned its rented turboprop aircraft to the lessor and took over two Airbus A319-100s , with which they continued to operate under the name Fastjet Airlines from November 29, 2012. Fastjet initially continued to operate the subsidiaries in Angola and Ghana under the Fly540 brand name. At the beginning of 2013, a dispute between the owners of the Fly540 and the British Fastjet Plc escalated because the latter had only paid part of the purchase price up to then. Fly540 then banned the company from using its brand name in Angola and Ghana. The Kenyan airline and its base in Nairobi also remained in the possession of the Fly540 group of companies. The subsidiaries based in Angola and Ghana were subsequently renamed Fastjet, but ceased operations at the beginning of 2014 for economic reasons.

In July 2017, Fastjet bought its own naming rights from the parent company. A one-time payment of 2.5 million US dollars was made for this. At the beginning of December 2017, the company decommissioned its last Airbus A319.

In September 2018, Fastjet reported that fresh money was needed at short notice. In December 2018, the airline announced that it would only have enough funds for another four days.

In mid-December 2018, all fastjet Tanzania flights within Tanzania were suspended. Flights from fastjet Zimbabwe and fastjet Mozambique as well as to and from Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa are excluded from this.

As of February 2019, Fastjet Tanzania no longer has licenses for flight operations.

In October 2015, Emirates and Fastjet signed an interlining agreement that allows passengers of both airlines to book flights from the other company.
