The Fat Boys (formerly The Disco Three ) were an American hip-hop formation from Brooklyn ( New York , NY ) from the 1980s .
history
The band members Robinson, Morales and Wimbley knew each other from an early age, as they grew up together in Brooklyn . First they appeared under the name The Disco Three. Robinson, called "The Human Beatbox", was one of the pioneers in the field of beatboxing . In 1983 they took part in a band competition organized by Coca-Cola , among others , and won - not least because of the "human drums", which was still quite unknown at the time - from a field of 500 bands the first prize, which was endowed with a recording contract.
After the debut single Reality , they changed their band name to The Fat Boys in 1984, which is said to have been coined by Charles Stettler , the group's manager at the time. He had been amused by the trio's eating habits during a tour of Europe . In addition, the name expressed very well that the three band members were very overweight. Under their new name, the group worked with Kurtis Blow , who composed and produced for them. Her debut album The Fat Boys brought her to number 48 on the Billboard album charts . In the same year they played their first film roles in Cry of the City . Over the next two years, the Fat Boys released two more albums that also made it onto the Billboard charts. Other small roles in the film business followed, including an appearance on the television series Miami Vice .
Unlike many other bands in the genre, the Fat Boys never tried to position themselves as gangsters or to respond to the insults of other groups with their own. Much of her lyrics deal with food, parties, and women. The Fat Boys thus occupy an exceptional position in rap and hip-hop, because few other artists have positioned themselves so friendly and peaceably.
The Fat Boys worked with the Beach Boys on the 1987 album Crushin ' . The joint title Wipeout , a cover version of the 1963 hit by surf rock band The Surfaris , reached number twelve on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two in the UK . The album went to number 8 on the Billboard 200 and became the band's most successful. In the same year they played their first leading roles in the comedy The Chaoten Team . For this film, they took their own version of the Beatles -title Baby You're a Rich Man to.
From the following album The Twist (Yo, Twist) was released, a new version of the song The Twist , which was recorded together with the original artist Chubby Checker . With this they took first place in Germany and Switzerland . In addition, the Fat Boys performed together with Chubby Checker alongside numerous other world stars of the music scene at a festival on the occasion of Nelson Mandela's seventieth birthday at Wembley Stadium .
In 1989 the band's career stalled. Her sixth album in six years was just able to maintain its position at number 175 in the charts. Mark Morales then left the band to work as a solo artist and producer. The remaining duo separated from the manager Stettler, changed the record company and recorded one last album, Mack Daddy . When this also flopped, the end of the Fat Boys was sealed. In 1992 Wimbley appeared on the Morales solo album as a guest musician. A reunion of the trio was not ruled out by the former band members. In December 1995, Darren Robinson died of a heart attack in New York . He was only 28 years old, but weighed over 200 kilograms at the time of his death.
