Fatih Mehmet Maçoğlu (born December 20, 1968 ) is a local politician of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP). He was the mayor of Ovacık and has been the mayor of the provincial capital Tunceli since 2019 . He was the only mayor of the TKP

Life

Maçoğlu was born in the village of Çemberlitaş in Tunceli, in the mountains of Dersim in Anatolia, to an Alevi Zaza- Kurdish family. He attended elementary school in Ovacık as a boarding school student and the vocational high school in Bingöl . His first professional position was in the health sector in İlçe Bozkır in Konya . From 1992 to 2007 he worked in Pertek as a health care worker. From 2007 he was employed in the emergency department at the Tunceli State Hospital. Maçoğlu is married and has two children.

In the municipal elections in 2014, Maçoğlu was elected mayor of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi with 36.1 percent of the vote in Ovacık, a town with 3,000 inhabitants. Maçoğlu initiated several reforms: the use of public transport in three Mahalle of Ovacık was free, the price of water significantly lowered and opened a library with 10,000 books. Agricultural cooperatives on state-owned land began to distribute the proceeds from the sale of crops (beans, chickpeas) to the poorest of the families and to distribute school scholarships; He ensured transparency of the public budget and founded a people's assembly of the villagers.

Maçoğlu left the party and then joined the Barış ve Demokrasi Partisi . He later switched to TKP. The "red village" and its mayor, who opposed the policies imposed by President Erdoğan's Islamic conservative AKP , became known all over Turkey. This popularity encouraged Maçoğlu to apply with the Turkish CP in the local elections in the neighboring town of Tunceli in 2019. The focus of his second local election campaign was the role of women in society. In 2019 Maçoğlu was elected mayor of the provincial capital Tunceli - which until then had been placed under forced administration by the Islamic-conservative AKP government .
