The Federación Estudiantil Universitaria ( FEU - German: Federation of University Students ) is a Cuban organization that accepts all students from Cuban universities .

The organization originally belonged to the University of Havana . Today, however, all universities in the country are affiliated with the organization. The FEU was founded in 1922 by Julio Antonio Mella , who was a Cuban revolutionary leader in the 1920s. It arose at the height of the university reforms that were taking place in America at that time .

prehistory

The FEU grew up in an environment of great political tension in America with clear rallies in the universities. In Cuba, the reform process of the Argentine University of Córdoba had a major impact on the student movement there, where demands were made such as:

  • Cleansing of the teaching staff : This should enable the dismissal of corrupt university teachers, as the number of purchased or illegally acquired university titles increased steadily.
  • University autonomy: This buried the years of backwardness and colonial dependence, when the universities were tied hand and foot to the politics of the respective state government, which also continued in the neo-colonial republic of Cuba. Illustrative of the close ties between government and university is the appointment of the Cabinet of President Alfredo Zayas in 1921, the same time the US - Ambassador Enoch Crowder , quasi de facto President of Cuba, the title of Honoris Causa was awarded.
  • Participation of the students in the university management : This should eliminate arbitrary bad treatment or de-registration .
  • The commitment to a representative organization , such as participation in the university leadership and, above all, in the jurisdictive and legislative bodies.

The FEU grew out of this.

development

On December 23, 1922, the organization that brings together Cuban university students today was launched. This corresponded to the necessity of the time to form an organization to guide and unite the students for the preparation and strengthening of the social movement.

Its first chairman was Julio Antonio Mella. A revolutionary stage was to follow later, which was led by Mella. Examples are the foundation of the Universidad Popular José Martí ( People's University José Martí ), the Anti-Imperialist League of Cuba (League Antiimperialista de Cuba), the founding of the magazines "Alma Mater" and "Juventud" ( "Youth"), and among others, the event of the 1st National Student Congress (Primer Congreso Nacional de Estudiantes).
