The total area of the complex is about 5 hectares , the investment was estimated at almost 50 million yuan, and the market is home to more than 1,000 companies. A study published on February 15, 2020 in The Lancet magazine named it as a reference for the origin of COVID-19 : “Clinical features of patients infected with 2019 novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China”. This study presents the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory and radiological characteristics, treatment and clinical results of 41 patients with COVID-19, 27 people (66%) of this group of 41 patients had contact with the wholesale market.

Geographical location

Wuhan's South China Fish Wholesale Market is located in Hankou , Jianghan District, Hubei Province, China , at the intersection of Development Avenue (second ring road) and Xinhua Road. Near Hankou Station, on the other side of the railway line, are the South China Fruit Group, which is part of the Wuhan South China Real Estate Group Co., Ltd. as well as the South China Glasses Wholesale Market. Buildings nearby include Hankou Railway Station and Wuhan Union Hospital .

history

The wholesale company has been at its current location since 2005 and has been expanded twice since then. The companies based on the property have an important function as employers.

The company was founded before 1991 when Hankou Railway Station was moved to its current location. Previously, the market was in the Jinjiadun area, just off Development Avenue's second ring road , in a remote area. The opening of the Hankou train station resulted in an economic boom in the market. It has been awarded the honorary title “Wuhan Civilized Market” several times. The fish market on the first floor is divided into east and west districts. There are 12 shopping streets in the eastern district and about 8 shops in each street, mainly selling meat. There are 15 streets in the western district, mainly selling freshwater fish, seafood and spices. The second floor is called South China Optical City and houses more than 100 retailers.

The South China seafood wholesaler is owned by Wuhan South China Seafood Market Co., Ltd. and has ownership overlap with the landowner, Wuhan South China Real Estate Group Co., Ltd. The scope of business includes the management of market property and the operation of parking lots, the wholesale and retail trade in water products and primary agricultural products, and the sale of foodstuffs. Its managing director is Yu Tian, and his brother Yu Qize is a shareholder. Yu Hong's father, Yu Zhusheng's ex-wife Zhao Hong, ran the South China Fish Market from 1999 to 2006. Zhao Hong's management period coincided with the period of SARS and H5N1 avian influenza . The market was disinfected daily and no infections reportedly occurred. In 2013, the South China fish market was hit by the H7N9 epidemic , but it has not closed.

The market is responsible for the supply of pork in many large markets in the north of the Yangtze and also sells wild animals (such as frogs, snakes, hedgehogs and others). There are many types of seafood on the market, dry goods and frozen foods. The market also provides procurement services for various hotels and businesses and is the distribution center for many hotels in the city. Shops typically open their doors at 4 or 5 a.m. and work around 12 hours. In 2011, the sales of the South China seafood wholesale market reached 1.3-1.5 billion yuan and continued to grow.

On the morning of September 25, 2019, representatives of several authorities in Wuhan jointly inspected the game's distribution in the market and found no violations of the legal requirements. Law enforcement personnel checked game distribution and business licenses from the eight traders who sell tiger frogs (Hoplobatrachus tigerinus), snakes, hedgehogs and other animals. In China there is a "game protection law"; the distribution of game is regulated by law.

Controversy

Cartel formation

In mid-July 2007, some business owners reported that the South China Seafood Wholesale Market Shrimp Association had a monopoly . The Shrimp Association organize the delivery and guarantee the quality. All shrimp companies would have to buy the goods the day before, and they would be billed the next day. Traders would be forced to join the Shrimp Association. As a result, the quality of the shrimp has deteriorated and prices have increased, which has affected the normal operation of some local businesses. Several departments later received complaints from citizens. The Wuhan Jianghan Industry and Commerce Department intervened in the investigation.

In 2010, citizens reported that pork bought at the Changsheng Slaughterhouse near the fish market was not allowed for sale in the South China fish market. Unknown people came out to block access and even threatened with knives and sticks.

Safety and hygiene

In 2013, the media reported that thousands of pounds of shrimp from leftover food in some restaurants were being dumped down the sewer system every day.

On February 22, 2014, the Wuhan Morning Post reported truck drivers to the authorities who were supplying the market and disposing of their garbage in the green belt next to the market.

In 2017, the National Medical Products Administration sampled the wet markets. 66 batches turned out to be inedible, among them the additive malachite green was detected in fish by two traders at the fish wholesale market . On June 27, 2019, the newspaper Volksnetzwerk 人民网 reported on unsanitary conditions in the market, but there was no reaction from the Wuhan city government.

Fraud with goods and money

Turtles that hatch in captivity or are caught and fattened can be recognized by a lack of pigmentation in the shell, which leads to price discounts. On April 15, 2008, reported Wuhan Morning Post that some vendors showed their customers in the deli market, such as burns through a solution of potassium permanganate can be generated, the visual impression of wild turtles. A reporter posing as a buyer was shown how this deceptive method is used on numerous turtles.

In September 2011, Jianghan's Industry and Trade Department, Tangjiadun Industry and Trade Bureau found 348 kg of adulterated or inedible products in the wholesale market. In October it was found that some dealers were defrauded with tampered with electronic scales.

Others

According to Qixinbao , Jianghan District Cattle Wholesale Center in Wuhan City was added to the abnormal list in July 2019. The wholesale center is located at 7, 8, 9, and 11 Fu Street, East Fish Market District, Jianghan District, Wuhan City. The general line of business includes fresh livestock, bulk food, wholesale and retail of packaged food, and wholesale and retail of fresh water products.

COVID-19

Through contacts in the fish market, there were pneumonia cases from COVID-19 in 2019 and 2020 , which caused controversy. On the afternoon of December 30, 2019, Li Wenliang saw a review that showed a patient with a positive indicator with a high confidence level of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. He spread a message to his classmates about the epidemic in the hypermarket, where 7 cases had been diagnosed. Four days later, Li Wenliang was warned and admonished by the Zhongnan Road Street Police Station of the Wuhan Public Security Bureau in the Wuchang Branch for "posting false statements on the Internet."

On December 31, 2019, the media reported that most traders are still working normally. On the same day, Red Star News reporters came to the fish market and found that several civilian workers at the Wuhan Disease Control Center were taking photos of the vendors, but the staff refused to respond when the reporter asked if they were conducting examinations on patient stands. The employees of the office replied with "without comment". According to an epidemiological survey, some patients run businesses in the seafood wholesalers in southern China.

On January 1, 2020, the Jianghan District Market Surveillance Administration of Wuhan City and the Sanitary and Health Bureau jointly released the announcement to close the market and carry out environmental sanitation remediation. The next day, most of the traders had closed their shops.

On January 17, 2020, Science magazine published an article that the South China seafood wholesale market in Wuhan may not be the source of the virus. Several media outlets later pointed this out.

On Sina Weibo was to read that are slaughtered on the wholesale market a variety of wild animals and sold. On January 21, a Beijing News reporter visited the site and found animal carcasses and slaughterhouse waste, and there were several companies selling game.

During the 2019 COVID-19 pandemic , Wu Xiaohua (武小华) presented a conspiracy theory that the P4 laboratory of the Wuhan Institute of Virology , where Shi Zhengli is located, is the source of the leaked virus. Shi Zhengli and many media outlets later reported that his arguments were insufficient, contained speculative elements, and were not true.
