Felix Maria von Exner-Ewarten (born August 23, 1876 in Vienna ; † February 7, 1930 there ) was an Austrian meteorologist and geophysicist . As a university professor in Innsbruck and Vienna and for many years director of the Central Institute for Geodynamics , he was an important theoretician in the three subject areas.

Life

He was the son of Sigmund Exner and Emilie Exner , b. from Winiwarther. Exner-Ewarten began studying physics in 1895. In 1904 he was appointed private lecturer at the University of Vienna , and in 1904 he was also elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1910 he received a university professorship for cosmic physics in Innsbruck , in 1917 he was appointed director of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics in Vienna and professor at the chair for Earth Physics at the University of Vienna. He held this position until his death in 1930.

His research focused on dynamic meteorology and the application of mechanics to geographic phenomena. Exner-Ewarten is considered a great theorist in the field of geophysics, geodynamics and meteorology.

In 1912 he wrote the article Dynamic Meteorology (with W. Trabert) in the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences . He was buried at the Heiligenstädter Friedhof in Vienna.

He married his second cousin Christiane Popp von Böhmstetten (1885–1941) in Vienna in 1905 , a daughter of Baron Konstantin Popp von Böhmstetten and Josepha Kolisko. The couple had two sons and two daughters, including:
