Felix Salzer
Felix Salzer (born 1904 in Vienna ; died 1986 in New York , NY ) was an Austro-American music theorist, musicologist and music teacher.
Life
Felix Salzer's parents were the doctor Max Salzer and Helene Wittgenstein , sister of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and the pianist Paul Wittgenstein . Felix Salzer studied musicology at the University of Vienna with Guido Adler and received his doctorate with a dissertation on the sonata form with Franz Schubert . At the same time he studied music theory and music analysis with Heinrich Schenker (1868–1935) and Hans Weisse. In 1939 Salzer emigrated to the USA and became an American citizen in 1940. He is best known as the author of the book Structural Hearing. Tonal Coherence in Music , in German under the title Structural Hearing. The tonal context in the music appeared (in 2 volumes) and Schenker's music- analytical method is stuck. Salzer had been married to Hedwig Lindtberg ( Leopold Lindtberg's sister ) since 1939 .
