Ferdinand Apshoven the Elder , also Ferdinand Apshoven I , Ferdinand Abshoven , Ferdinand Abtshoven and Ferdinand van Apshoven , (baptized May 17, 1576 in Antwerp ; † between September 18, 1654 and September 18, 1655 there ) was a Flemish painter.

life and work

Ferdinand Apshoven the Elder Ä. was the son of a man of the same name, possibly from Germany. He was the father of Thomas van Apshoven and Ferdinand Apshoven the Elder, also known as painters . J. and a nephew of Caspar de Crayer . His exact date of birth is not known; he was baptized on May 17, 1576 in the Sint-Andrieskerk in Antwerp. He was an apprentice of the painter Adam van Noort , in whose workshop he worked from 1592/93. From 1596/97 he was listed as a free master in the leagues of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke . Between 1597 and 1621 he trained at least seven students in his own workshop: Jan Michielsen (1597/98), Alaert du Gangier (1601/02), Jacob Jacobsen , Gaspar Couvreur (both 1604/05), Peeter Geerkens (1613 / 14), Peeter Isak (1617) and Hans van Wolschaeten (1620/21). An initial training of his two sons Thomas and Ferdinand is not documented, but probably. From 1620 to 1621 he was a member of the Haakbus guild. From 1627 to 1644 he was a consultant of the sodality of the gehuwde jongmans van de Jezuïeten.

On August 29, 1617 he married Eleonora (Linnotor) Wijns, with whom he had eight children. His exact date of death cannot be determined; but he seems to have died between September 18, 1654 and September 18, 1655 in Antwerp.

His artistic career is completely in the dark today, as not a single work can currently be assigned to him. It is likely that he worked as a history painter like his teacher. In addition, however, he also seems to have painted portraits; one such, the portrait of Thomas Courtois , is documented by Th. van Lerius.
