Joseph Ferdinand Gueldry (born May 21, 1858 in Paris , † February 17, 1945 in Lausanne ) was a French painter and illustrator.

Life

His parents, Henri-Sophie-Frédéric-Victor Gueldry and Marie-Adele Ranck, were of Alsatian origin. From 1874 to 1878 he studied at the École des beaux-art de Paris with Jean-Léon Gérôme .

While still studying art, he became an avid rower . Together with his friends, he founded the sports club Société nautique de la Marne in 1876 on the Marne island of Fanac, not far from Joinville-le-Pont . From 1881 he devoted his painting almost exclusively to rowing. He spent the period from 1880 to 1890 in Bry-sur-Marne , where he set up his studio and was able to practice his sport at the same time.

He was appointed international rowing referee and visited England several times to take part in the Henley Royal Regatta .

Stylistically, he rejected Gérôme academicism and approached the style of Edouard Manet .

From 1885 he began to paint scenes in the factory interiors of the textile and metal industries. It also created some military scenes.

In the Salon of 1898, his painting "The Blood Drinkers", depicting anemic women drinking the blood of an ox slaughtered in a slaughterhouse, caused a stir.

In 1908, thanks to the proposal of Édouard Detaille, he was made Knight of the Legion of Honor .

During the First World War he painted scenes from the theaters of war, including Verdun .

In the 1920s, he presided over the Free Society of French Artists after leaving the Society of French Artists in 1907.

Gueldry participated in the Salon des artistes français of 1889 and received a 3rd class medal. At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889 he won a silver medal. During the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 he was awarded a silver medal. At the international level he exhibited during the world exhibitions of Chicago (1893), Antwerp (1894), Brussels (1897) and Saint-Louis (1904). He also showed his works in Munich (1888), St. Petersburg (1890) and Moscow (1892). In 1912 he took part in the art competition at the Olympic Games in Stockholm .
