Ferdinand Piatnik I (1819–1885)

Ferdinand Piatnik (born October 14, 1819 in Ofen , † July 20, 1885 in Bad Vöslau ) was an Austro-Hungarian card painter and founder of the Viennese playing card factory Ferd. Piatnik & Sons .

biography

Piatnik completed an apprenticeship with the playing card maker Johann Gravatz in Ofen (now Budapest) and passed the journeyman's examination in Pressburg in 1839 . He came to Vienna through the Walz and began to work in Anton Moser's (1784–1842) card-making workshop. After Anton Moser's death, he took over the business and married the widow. From 1843 the company operated under Ferdinand Piatnik .

Piatnik developed playing card motifs such as the Viennese vedute tarot with street scenes and views from the third quarter of the 19th century and the so-called “double Germans” with mirror images of half-figures from Schiller's “ Wilhelm Tell ”, which were very successful. From 1882 onwards, he involved his two older sons Ferdinand (1857–1930) and Adolf (1859–1940) in the business and renamed the company “Ferdinand Piatnik & Sons”.
