Ferdinand R. Prostmeier

Ferdinand R. Prostmeier (* 1957 ) is a Catholic theologian and professor of New Testament literature and exegesis at the Theological Faculty of the University of Freiburg .

biography

Prostmeier studied social education / social work at the Catholic Foundation University of Applied Sciences in Munich , Benediktbeuern department, as well as philosophy and Catholic theology at the Philosophical-Theological University of the Salesians Don Bosco in Benediktbeuern . He was at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Regensburg Dr. theol. doctorate and was a research assistant at the chair for Biblical Theology (introductory studies of the Old Testament and New Testament).

Prostmeier completed his habilitation at the University of Regensburg and was authorized to teach the subjects "Exegesis of the New Testament" and "Ancient Church History and Patrology". In 2003 he received the professorship for Biblical Studies - New Testament Exegesis at the Institute for Catholic Theology at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . Since the summer semester 2009 he has been professor and head of the department for New Testament literature and exegesis at the theological faculty of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg.

research

One of Prostmeier's main research areas in the field of New Testament scriptures is the first epistle of Peter and the synoptic gospels . In addition, Prostmeier's research focuses on the history, culture and literature of early Christianity. For the series Commentary on Early Christian Apologists, he translates and explains the three books 'To Autolykos' by Theophilos of Antioch . For this research project he received an Opus magnum scholarship from the Volkswagen Foundation (October 1, 2014– March 31, 2016) and a Rector's Fellowship at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) (April 1 - September 30, 2016). To promote research into early Christianity, Prostmeier initiated the International Working Group Second Century (IAG2) in 1992 together with Norbert Brox and Horacio E. Lona .

Prostmeier has been a full member of the international research association Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas (SNTS) since 2003 . Since 2007 he has been chairman of the SNTS seminar No. 1 Christian Literature of the late first century and together with Huub van der Sandt (Tilburg), from 2012 together with Wilhelm Pratscher (Vienna) and James A. Kelhoffer (Uppsala) the second century . Since 2011 he has been a member of the board of the VETUS LATINA Foundation . Prostmeier has been a member of the Association Internationale d'Études Patristiques (AIEP) / International Association of Patristic Studies (IAPS) since 2012 .
