Thomas Johann Bauer (* 1973 ) is a German Roman Catholic theologian and university professor .

Life

Bauer studied Catholic theology at the University of Regensburg and the Gregorian and classical philology at the University of Giessen , where he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . To the Dr. theol. He received his doctorate in 2011 from the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . In 2007, his philosophical doctoral thesis was awarded the dissertation prize of the Justus Liebig University in Gießen and his theological doctoral thesis was awarded the Bernhard Welte Prize in 2011. He taught in Giessen and as an academic councilor a. Currently at the New Testament Literature and Exegesis division in Freiburg im Breisgau . In 2009, Bauer was appointed Associate Professor of the New Testament at the Department of Biblical Studies in Freiburg im Üechtland and has been Professor of Exegesis and Theology of the New Testament at the University of Erfurt since 2014 . From July 2017 to September 2019 he was dean of the Erfurt faculty. Since 2014 he has also been the scientific director of the Vetus Latina Institute Beuron. In this function he coordinates and heads the edition of the remains of the oldest Latin translation of the biblical writings ( Vetus Latina ). He is working on a critical edition of the testimonies of the oldest Latin translation of the Gospel of Luke.

Bauer was elected dean of the Sectio theologica of the Bavarian Benedictine Academy in November 2019 , of which he has been a member since 2017.

His current research interests include the Revelation of John and early Christian and early Jewish apocalyptic; New Testament, early Christian and ancient letters; Beginnings of Christianity and its literature in the context of the cultural and religious history of the Roman Empire; Beginnings, History and Tradition of the Latin Bible.
