Georg Schmuttermayr (born August 31, 1932 in Pfaffenhofen adIlm ; † March 5, 2017 in Scheyern ) was a German Catholic theologian and professor of introductory biblical studies at the University of Regensburg .

Life

After attending school in his hometown and in Ingolstadt, he graduated from the humanistic grammar school of the Benedictine Abbey of Scheyern in 1953 with the final exam. He studied history and German and then theology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , specializing in biblical studies and oriental languages. In 1962 Georg Schmuttermayr became an employee at Vinzenz Hamp's biblical seminar . He was in 1966 at the Munich University doctorate in theology with a thesis on "Psalm 18 and 2 Sam 22" doctorate . On 23 July 1967 he was in Augsburg by diocesan Bishop Josef Stimpfle for ordained priest and then worked as a chaplain in Dillingen . In 1971 he qualified as a professor at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Regensburg in the subject of the Old Testament and biblical-oriental languages ​​with the text "Studies on the Hebrew Basis DBR I". In the same year he became a professor at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Bamberg . In 1974 he was offered a chair for introductory biblical studies (Old and New Testament) at the University of Regensburg, where he taught and researched until his retirement in 2000; from 1997 to 1999 he was the dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty.

In addition to his scientific work, Georg Schmuttermayr has been active as a pastor for people with disabilities in an institution of the Regens Wagner Foundation near Holzkirchen since 1969 . He was also a member of the Augsburg cathedral chapter since 1984 and was responsible for the doctrine of the faith and worship as well as for the universities. In this function he was entrusted with the preparation and implementation of the Augsburg Bishopric Synod in 1990. Since 1995, Georg Schmuttermayr has also been a member and deputy chairman of the foundation board of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt .

Georg Schmuttermayr was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land and was a member of the German Association of the Holy Land . In 2008 he was appointed Knight of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master John Patrick Foley and invested in the order on May 17, 2008 in Cologne Cathedral by Reinhard Cardinal Marx , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy .

Georg Schmuttermayr was buried on March 11, 2017 in the tomb of the cathedral chapter in the inner courtyard of the cathedral cloister of Augsburg cathedral .
