Ferdinand Stefan Rostásy (born May 4, 1932 in Vienna ; † August 16, 2018 ) was a civil engineer born in Austria and later mainly living in Germany .

Live and act

Rostásy passed his Abitur in Judenburg in 1950 and then studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart until 1954 . In 1958 he was at the Institute for Materials Science and Testing (Otto Graf Institute) with a thesis on theoretical and experimental contributions to the study of shrinkage and shrinkage stresses of concrete doctorate .

He then went to the Structural Laboratory of the Portland Cement Association in Chicago for two years, where he researched prestressed concrete . From 1961 to 1963 he headed a precast construction design group in the main design office of Strabag in Cologne . Until 1968 he was the technical manager of the precast plants in Cologne and Salzgitter of Munte in Braunschweig . He then went back to the University of Stuttgart and took over the management of the steel and reinforced concrete department at the Otto Graf Institute. In 1975 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on constraint and crack limitation in external walls made of lightweight reinforced concrete. In 1976 he was appointed to the chair for building materials science and reinforced concrete construction at the Technical University of Braunschweig and was also director of the materials testing institute for construction in Braunschweig. He worked there until he retired from active service in 1997. Rostásy was a member of numerous national and international scientific associations and bodies.

Rostásy dealt with the shrinkage and heat development of concrete and the associated constraints, the creep of concrete, the low-temperature behavior of concrete and steel, especially in connection with liquid gas tanks, the behavior of concrete and the bond behavior of concrete and steel at high temperatures , with precast pre- stressed concrete parts , with the fracture mechanics of concrete, with the corrosion of prestressing steel , with the formation of cracks and crack width limitation in reinforced concrete components , with steel fiber concrete , with the subsequent reinforcement of components by means of glued reinforcement, with fiber composite materials as reinforcement, with thermal insulation composite systems , with questions of durability Masonry and questions of monument preservation as well as measuring methods for building supervision .

In 1983 he also published a textbook on building materials.

Rostásy was married and had several children.
