Ferdinand Schmalz (* 1985 in Graz as Matthias Schweiger ) is an Austrian playwright , prose writer and theater scholar.

Life

Ferdinand Schmalz grew up in Admont in Upper Styria. He studied theater studies and philosophy in Vienna. Schmalz was assistant director at the Schauspielhaus Wien and the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf. He is a member of the free collective “mulde_17” and is a co-founder of the “Suddenness” festival, which took place for the first time in June 2012 in the Theater im Bahnhof Graz. Commissioned works were created for the Schauspielhaus Graz , Schauspiel Leipzig and the Schauspielhaus Zürich . Ferdinand Schmalz lives in Vienna.

In 2017 he won the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize with my favorite animal is winter .
