action
Ten 6th grade students from Altenburg who look after a children's library are on their way to the GDR's birthday celebrations in the capital Berlin to take part in the festivities. After a tour of the city by bus, they take a first break in the children's café of the Haus des Kinds, on the 13th floor of what was then the tallest house in the city, on Strausberger Platz, and enjoy the beautiful view. During the subsequent stroll along Karl-Marx-Allee, you can see various events such as a children's fashion show, a go- kart race, pottery work, chess players, artistic cyclists and a girl on the gymnastics wheel .
At one of the booths they meet the writer Alex Wedding , in whom they are very interested, since they themselves have a lot to do with books. A conversation gets going very quickly and the children and their teacher are invited to Alex Wedding's apartment for the next day. During this visit, which lasts an hour, the children ask a lot of questions and when they say goodbye the writer has to promise to visit them in Altenburg once.
Then the rest of the program for the Berlin visit is processed. The most important point is the pioneer railway in the Wuhlheide pioneer park . Unfortunately the train doesn't run that day, but when a railroad worker steps out of the station building, the Altenburgers convince him to make a special trip just for them. From here it goes to the Tierpark Berlin , where you can even ride ponies. Here they also meet members of a drawing circle from the House of Young Pioneers who are trying to draw the polar bears. Then they follow the draftsmen into the pioneer house and are surprised by the many opportunities for leisure activities. There is a self-designed television program, a motorcycle driving school, a choir, an orchestra and much more.
Back in Altenburg, everyday life quickly returns. Part of the group that was in Berlin is on a publicity tour for the library in the city. At the same time, Alex Wedding appears in the library to keep her promise. The joy of seeing each other is great and the advertisers also arrive on time.
