With both legs in the sky - encounter with a flight captain is a documentary film by the DEFA studio for documentaries by Winfried Junge from 1968.

action

The eldest son Günter Schneider is also there for his father's birthday party in Mylau near Reichenbach in Vogtland . He is the only one of five brothers and two sisters who works far away, so he has no fool's freedom at home. Günter Schneider works as a flight captain for Interflug . Originally, he wanted to be a locomotive driver and therefore learned the profession of a locomotive fitter. He then volunteered for the National People's Army , where he was trained as a pilot. Now at the age of 36, he is already one of Interflug's most capable flight captains.

The film shows Günter Schneider's day of work on the flight to Moscow and is interrupted by reports on various other of his activities. The day begins with the visit to the meteorological service of the Berlin Schoenefeld airport , then it goes to the aircraft, an Ilyushin Il-18 with the registration DM-STC. There he meets his team, which is also presented. Then the preparations for the flight begin and the passengers arrive. The engines are started and off you go. The conversations in the cockpit and in the tower are shown. Excerpts from a gathering of pilots are shown, where he embarrasses those responsible with critical questions. The point is that decisions should not only be made by individuals, but that those who are affected must also be involved. Back in the plane, the Soviet state border is being flown over and Günter Schubert signs up. After a stewardess had brought coffee for the crew, the cigarettes were lit first, which was still allowed at that time.

A clip shows that the Il-18 can still fly with two failed engines on one side. The landing then took place with the engine switched off. These recordings were of course made without passengers and were recorded by a permanently installed camera in the cockpit and from an airplane flying in parallel. The same section shows Günter Schneider in his role as a flight instructor. Here he is observed working with three flight students, in theory and in practice.

Landing in Moscow in the snow. Here he meets his former Soviet flight instructor Minajew from Aeroflot , who has just arrived from Cairo and with whom he can of course speak in Russian without any problems. Both are looking forward to relearning how to use the new jet-powered aircraft.
