history

Freiberg water tower

On an area east of the Freiberg Hospital Forest, which belonged to the St. Johannis Hospital in front of the Freiberg Peterstor, which was first mentioned in 1224 , the "Bartholomäushospital", also called "Fernesiechen", was founded around 1250. The first mention was made in an undated document from the middle of the 13th century, in 1371 the hospital Fernesiechen is mentioned with a date.

The Johannis and Bartholomäus hospitals came under common jurisdiction in 1570. Like the Freibergsdorf manor, they were not subject to the Freiberg council. The economic goods near the hospital were to the west and northeast of the city of Freiberg. The "Bartholomäuskirche" belonging to the hospital was demolished like the hospital in 1843.

In 1907 the striking water tower was built in the southern area of Fernesiechen to improve the water supply for the city of Freiberg. From 1956 the residential area Wasserberg was built south of Fernesiechen, the landmark of which is the water tower today.

The historic buildings of Fernesiechen are used today as the retirement homes "Haus Johannishof" and "Haus Elisabeth" of the Freiberg retirement homes.
