history

Freiberg water tower

The water mountain, which gave the later settlement its name, was once covered with a forest which, as part of the “hospital forest”, belonged to the St. Johannis Hospital in front of the Freiberg Peterstor, first mentioned in 1224 . The corridor of the Wasserberg, however, belonged to the Freibergsdorf manor . A water tank existed on the mountain as early as 1400, from which water reached the city of Freiberg underground.

In 1907 the striking water tower was built on Chemnitzer Straße to improve the water supply for the city of Freiberg. Today it is the landmark of Wasserberg.

From 1956 the residential area Wasserberg was built in the southwest of Freiberg. The southeastern part consists of prefabricated buildings that were built later .
