The lower town of Freiberg describes the north-eastern, topographically lower part of the Freiberg old town. It is the oldest settlement area in the city and includes the settlements of Christiansdorf and Sächsstadt , which are occupied as urban germ cells .

geography

The Freiberg lower town is the main focus of living, has an area of approximately 0.34 km² and lies on both sides of the Münzbach , which flows through this part of the town from south to north and is completely piped. The district borders in a semicircle, separated by Erbische Strasse and Burgstrasse, directly to the northeast from the upper town . Lower Town and upper town are as a whole town, where it regards the area about the lower town 2 / 3 includes. The demarcation to the suburbs outside the former city wall is given by the streets Meißner Ring , Donatsring , Hornstraße and parallel to this by the course of the former city fortifications , most of which are still preserved in this area. The streets Helmertplatz , Wasserturmstraße and Talstraße follow the valley floor of the Münzbach valley. To the west of it ran the former Mühlgraben , which can still be recognized by the street name Am Mühlgraben . The Pfarrgasse is roughly on the parcel of the former Christian village. On the current Berggasse - called "Schüppchenberg" (Schüppchen = chick ) in the urban vernacular - tradition has it, after the first discovery of solid silver ore by Hallesche salt carts or Goslar miners . Around the butter market , where the Nikolaikirche and the theater are located, Weingasse , Enge Gasse , Nikolaigasse and Aschegasse are assumed to be the former Saxon town . The Freiberg Cathedral St. Marien is located within the streets Am Dom , Untermarkt , Moritzstraße and Domgasse . The remaining streets ( Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse, Mönchsstrasse, Brennhausgasse, Kirchgasse, Thielestrasse, Borngasse, Heubnerstrasse, Kreuzgasse, Färbergasse, Jakobigasse, Terrassengasse, Kesselgasse, Theatergasse, Donatsgasse, Buttermarktgasse, Stollngasse, Herderstrasse, An der Nikolaikirche, Gerbergasse, Meißner Gasse, Bäckergäßchen, Untergasse, Silbermannstrasse, Schloßplatz ) form an irregular network.

Attractions

The Freiberg old town, i.e. upper and lower town combined, has 1,250 architectural monuments . The Freiberg Cathedral is one of the most outstanding and well-known in the lower town . This list can be continued with the Nikolaikirche , the Donatsturm , which at the same time forms an end point of the still existing city fortifications , the Freiberg City and Mining Museum , the Geoscientific and Technical Collections of the Freiberg Mining Academy with the Historical Cabinet and the Winkler Memorial .

traffic

The lower town consists of many streets, some of which are very narrow and very steep, with cobblestones that have been restored under the aspect of monument protection . Most of the walkways and sidewalks consist of large granite slabs . We are working on barrier-free paths and accesses. From the beginning of private car traffic, there have been many one-way street regulations . The parking space is small and mainly reserved for residents. For this reason, driving on with a car for tourist purposes is not recommended. Even the bicycle is not the optimal mode of transport, but it can be used. Freiberg sees itself as a “city of short distances”, so that most distances can be comfortably covered on foot. There is a connection to the public transport bus at the city ring (Meißner Ring, Donatsring, Hornstraße) . The distance from the most distant point of the lower town to the bus station is a maximum of 1 km, to the train station about 2 km. Erbische Strasse and Burgstrasse , as well as the area around Meißner Gasse and Untermarkt, have been developed into a pedestrian zone . There are parking spaces for cars on Hornstrasse ( multi-storey car park ), Untermarkt and Buttermarkt (but only a small number of parking spaces here).
