history

Origin until 1945

In the area of what is now the old town center of Friedeburg in the east of the district, the “Pragersche Vorwerk ” existed in the 16th century . This was at the beginning of the 17th century owned by the Saxon Upper tithe agent and Mountain Council Gottfried Pabst von Ohain (baptized thirtieth March 1656 in Mohorn ; † 19th July 1729 in Friedeburg). Pabst von Ohain had farms built on his property, so that the “Gottfriedsburg” settlement was built on the Prager Vorwerk, for which the name “Friedeburg” became naturalized from 1732. From the Vorwerk in today's "Bernhard-Kellermann-Straße" the manor Friedeburg, named in 1764, developed, which exercised the basic rule over the place Friedeburg. Until 1856 the settlement was in the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon District Office Freiberg . From 1856 the place belonged to the Freiberg judicial office and from 1875 to the Freiberg district administration . At that time Friedeburg had 1,354 inhabitants. The manor was referred to as a chancellery property in 1875 . The renovated building is still inhabited today.

On April 1, 1908, Friedeburg was incorporated into Freiberg.

1945 to 1990

Friedeburg residential area

As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , Friedeburg became a district of the city of Freiberg in 1952 and became part of the Freiberg district in the Chemnitz district (renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which was continued as the Freiberg district of Saxony from 1990 . In the spring of 1985, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the “Friedeburg” development area, which in its residential structure mainly consists of six-storey prefabricated buildings. The large residential area with around 2,300 apartments should offer space for almost 8,500 people. Between 1983 and 1985, the Freiberg Temple, the only temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ( Mormons ), built in a socialist country, was built in the Friedeburg district .

Development of Friedeburg since 1990

Since the mid-1990s, a new residential area "Neu-Friedeburg" with single-family houses and semi-detached houses has been built west of the original prefabricated building areas of Friedeburg. The field land, which was initially fallow, was developed as a park and recreational area including multi-storey car parks as part of the modernization.

Within the urban redevelopment concept of the city of Freiberg, which includes solutions to the decline in population and its consequences, extensive dismantling and renovation measures have been carried out in the prefabricated building district. Dismantling measures, for example the dismantling of the blocks on only four floors, were also planned. The housing cooperative Freiberg eG (WG Freiberg) completed, among other things, a complete dismantling of Arthur-Schulz-Straße 19-25. Despite strong criticism and protests from residents and residents of the city, the municipal housing company Freiberg (SWG) had a block of flats on Kurt-Handwerk-Straße 2 demolished in 2010. In May and November 2006 the two department stores of the retail chain nah & gut closed . One of the two department stores was demolished in summer 2008. The wasteland was bought from the adjacent supermarket and converted into a parking lot.

In 2012, a new residential construction concept started by building another part of the wasteland between “Martin-Planer-Straße” and “Hainichener Straße” north of “Neu-Friedeburg”. In the area of the former GDR airfield, several new single-family houses have been built and new roads have been built. The “Martin-Planer-Straße” was extended here as a new road connection and the new “Heynitzstraße” was linked to the “Abraham-von-Schönberg-Straße”.

With regard to the small-scale structure of the city of Freiberg, Friedeburg and Neu-Friedeburg form two of the four districts of the Freiberg-Nord district.
