description

Ferocactus pilosus grows individually or forms large groups. The shoots reach heights of up to 3 meters with a diameter of 50 centimeters. There are 13 to 20 non-humped ribs , which are sharp-edged and later rounded in young plants. The areoles on it are close together and thus seem to almost merge into one another. The bright red or yellow, spreading thorns are sublet and slightly curved. They can hardly be differentiated into central and radial spines. The mostly red, six to 12 central spines are strong and up to 5 centimeters long. The radial spines are usually reduced to numerous, whitish bristles.

The yellow to red flowers appear in circles around the tip of the shoot. They reach a length of up to 4 centimeters and a diameter of 2.5 centimeters. The 3 to 4 centimeters long yellow fruits are egg-shaped.
