The connection in the south is to be made at Anápolis in Goiás to Ferrovia Centro Atlântica (FCA) and in the north near Açailândia in the state of Maranhão it has already been established with the Estrada de Ferro Carajás (EFC), both railway companies are also operated by the CVRD (Vale) group operated. The construction work on Ferrovia Norte-Sul was started in the 1980s by the then President José Sarney and the section from Açailândia in Maranhão to Colinas in Tocantins has been completed to this day (2009) .
