Freddy Bienstock

Freddy Bienstock (born April 24, 1928 in Switzerland , † September 20, 2009 in New York ) was an American music producer .

Life

Bienstock's family moved to Vienna when he was three years old. He and his brother emigrated to the USA shortly before the outbreak of World War II . First he worked as an employee at the record label Chappell & Company and then joined the music publisher Hill and Range Songs , founded by his two cousins , which published titles by Elvis Presley , among others . In 1966 he bought the British partner company of Hill and Range Songs , Belinda Music, and renamed it Carlin Music Corporation . He then released The Kinks , The Animals and Cliff Richard on the label .

In 1969 he left his cousins' company and founded the Hudson Bay Music Company with Leiber / Stoller , which he gradually expanded by acquiring Koppelman and Rubin , Starday , King Records , Herald Square Music and Times Square Music . The latter two were former subsidiaries of The New York Times , which held the rights to several Broadway plays (including Anatevka and Cabaret ). In 1980 the collaboration with Leiber and Stoller was ended. In the following year, Bienstock bought the music publisher Edward B Marks Music Co. , which among other things held the distribution rights to the compositions of Jim Steinman . In 1984 he became CEO of Chappell & Company , as the majority shareholder he later participated in the sale of Warner Communications .

Bienstock remained CEO of Carlin Music Corporation until his death, his daughter Caroline has been COO since 1989 and his son Robert has worked there as Senior Vice President since 1994. Bienstock was also a board member of ASCAP .
